MET (Muscle Energy Technique)

Active muscle treatment with patient participation

MET (Muscle Energy Technique) is a treatment method where the osteopath places one or more joints in specific positions and the patient is asked to hold against with a constant pressure. This technique requires active participation from the patient and is based on the principle of isometric contraction followed by relaxation. The technique is used to lengthen and strengthen muscles and to increase joint mobility by affecting the muscle tension around the joint.

Benefits

  • Improved muscle function
  • Increased joint mobility
  • Reduced muscle tension
  • Improved motor control
  • Effective for both acute and chronic conditions

Some examples of conditions that can be treated:

MET is particularly effective for treating:

  • Muscle tensions
  • Limited joint mobility
  • Muscle imbalance
  • Posture-related problems
  • Rehabilitation after injuries

What to expect

During an MET treatment, you will be instructed to push against the osteopath's resistance for a few seconds and then relax. This process is usually repeated several times. You will be an active participant in your treatment, which many patients appreciate as it gives a sense of control and involvement.
